The film is set in an alternate time course in 1985. While the opening credits are different divergent historical events after World War II demonstrated, for example, election posters for a third term of Richard Nixon or the U.S. victory in the Vietnam War by Dr. Manhattan.

Edward “The Comedian” Blake, a 67-year-old super-hero of the first hour, is attacked in his New York apartment by an unknown assailant and thrown out the window. The police is based on a robbery, but Rorschach, one of only two still-active superheroes, looks at the crime scene later in more detail and suggested a targeted killing. He goes to his suspicions and leads about diary. He warned the other members of the Watchmen, Nite Owl II, Ozymandias, Dr. Manhattan and Silk Specter II, Dr. Manhattan is conducting research into a nuclear fusion reactor that will work the same way as his body. This, he hopes, together with Adrian Veidt (Ozymandias), who has abandoned one of two Watchmen to the public his identity, he could end the war because the fighting would fall for energy resources. Veidt earns his money with the merchandising of Watchmen memorabilia.

Rorschach discovers that an arch enemy (Edgar “Moloch” Jacobi) was the comedian to attend his funeral, after which he seeks juggernaut. This tells Rorschach, the Comedian that he had visited one weeks before his death, drunk “and he was telling stories confused. Simultaneously Laurie Jupiter (Silk Specter II) with their relationship with Jon (Dr. Manhattan) is not satisfied. She feels neglected by his growing spirituality and the permanent indentation in his work. After he is done during sexual intercourse with her from the reactor to him, then teleport to Adrian Veidt in Antarctica, she leaves him and wants to be close by Daniel Dreiberg (Nite Owl II).

As for Adrian Veidt assassination is committed, he can overpower the terrorists, but this dies with a poison capsule. Rorschach discovers here is that the assassin works for a company by the Edgar Jacobi receives a pension. When he goes to Jacobi, that was already shot and Rorschach lured into a trap. He is arrested and the secret to his identity is revealed. In the prison of the Rorschach unmasked as Walter Kovacs is attacked, after which he severely injured the assailant and he later died. In his cell, he is threatened by the criminals he has brought to this prison.

Dan and Laurie have an affair, has disappeared as Jon. He developed with Laurie’s plan to free Rorschach too. However, a revolt broke out in prison, to be killed in the Rorschach. This can fend off his attackers and fled with Dan and Laurie. When they arrive in hiding from Dan, Jon waits on Laurie and teleports with her talking to Mars to deal with it. She learns that her father is the comedian and that he has tried, her mother, the first Silk Specter rape to. Later, however, both testified agreed Laurie. This begs Jon, the soil before the nuclear holocaust protect.

Meanwhile, Dan and Rorschach find that the company that the comedian has her killed, one is of Adrian Veidt’s companies. They fly to his hideout in Antarctica, where he reveals to them that nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the United States can be prevented only by providing a reason for a rapprochement. He lights fusion bombs with the energy signature of Dr. Manhattan and thereby killing millions of people in different cities of the world. Dr. Manhattan realizes the intention of Adrian’s actions. The agreement between the two superpowers based on the supposed fear of further attacks by Dr. Manhattan. But Rorschach is upset because he does not want to live with this lie, and leave the hiding place to inform the world about the true cause of the attacks. Dr. Manhattan stops him and kills him. He then leaves the earth to create a new life on other planets. Laurie and Dan go up a solid relationship.

In the last scene before the end credits shows how a newspaper editor in Rorschach’s diary, in which he has recorded the complete results of its investigations, found in the mail.

In the course of the film through many flashbacks diverse backgrounds of the Watchmen tells about the origin of Dr. Manhattan in an accident, alcohol dependence by Sally Jupiter, the first Silk Specter, or the death of Silhouette.
